Buck's Mexican Tortilla Casserole

My granddaughter's Valentine's Day was almost ruined.

My granddaughter came over last week looking like she didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

I asked her what happened.

She held up her phone and showed me a picture of a cake.

Now, some young man, who I will say had good intentions, ordered her a Valentine's Day cake from one of those online bakeries.

The kind that lets you type in a custom message and they write it on the cake.

Sweet idea. Really.

Here's where things fell apart.

Whatever this boy typed, and whatever the bakery's people read, did not match up.

Because what showed up at my granddaughter's door was not a romantic Valentine's message.

It was a command.

I stared at that picture for a long second.

Then I said, "Baby, that boy didn't send you a Valentine. He sent you a threat."

She lost it laughing.

The cake itself looked just as rough as the message. I don't know what happened in that bakery kitchen, but whatever this thing went through before it arrived at her door, it was not pretty. The icing looked like it had given up on life.

I told my granddaughter, "Sweetheart, this cake looks depressed. The kindest thing we could do is take it out back and put it out of its misery."

My wife, who had been quietly listening from the kitchen, walked over, looked at the picture, looked at me, and said, "You're not wrong."

That's how you know it was bad. When my wife agrees with me, something has gone seriously sideways.

Now, to the young man's credit, he was mortified. Apparently he typed out a perfectly normal message and the bakery just… interpreted it differently. He offered to send another cake immediately.

My granddaughter told him absolutely not.

I told her that was the right call. One mystery cake per Valentine's Day is the limit. That's just common sense.

The boy eventually showed up with flowers, which was the correct move. He's not a lost cause.

Just needs better vendors.

As for the cake, she said she ate it. It tasted fine.

It looked like it had been through a war and lost the will to go on. But the flavor was solid.

Which, if I'm being honest, there is probably a lesson in there somewhere.

How was your Valentines?

Enjoy your Sunday!
