My son-in-law gave my grandbabies guns.

When I was a kid, water guns were obviously water guns.

They were neon green. You could see straight through them. And they leaked so bad that by the time you got one shot off, you looked like you'd peed your pants.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, ever mistook one for the real thing.

Last weekend, we were over at my daughter's house. My son-in-law walked in grinning ear to ear and pulled out the new water guns he bought for the kids.

The kids are 3 and 6.

I Did a Double Take

Y'all, this thing was black. It had a scope. It looked like it came straight out of a SWAT locker.

You could stick up a gas station with it and nobody would ask questions until you started spraying.

Now let me be clear. I'm a Texan. I own guns. I believe in the right to own them.

But I don't believe a 3-year-old needs something that looks like it does a lot more than squirt water.

Here's what gets me. The world has gone soft. Kids get trophies for showing up. Some of them can't even keep score at T-ball anymore.

Yet somehow, somebody signed off on this.

I told my son-in-law, "Son, I know it's a water gun. But the neighbor won't know that when your 6-year-old jumps out of the bushes with it."

He laughed. I wasn't joking.

On the drive home, I was still going on about it. My wife let me finish, then said, "Buck, you're just jealous. Your water guns couldn't hit the broad side of a barn."

She's not wrong. Mine mostly hit me.

Am I being an old fart, or should a water gun look like a water gun?

Enjoy your Sunday!
