I need your opinion. 

What should I tell my son and daughter-in-law?

They planned a dream vacation. 

They don't get the opportunity to go very many places because they have stressful jobs.

However, they were able to save up some money and take time off to visit their dream destination halfway around the world. 

However, my daughter-in-law's mother planned a pretty intense surgery at the exact same time they were leaving. 

There's nobody else in the area that can really help her during this time besides them.

Keep in mind, she knew they were going on this vacation.

Plus, there were other dates available for the surgery. 

We believe that she did this as a way of getting attention, stirring up trouble or both.

Here's the advice I gave to my son.

I told him to tell his mother-in-law that she scheduled the surgery for when they were away. 

If she's going to need help, then she'll need to reschedule the surgery or make other arrangements.

My sister-in-law understands it, but feels guilty. And so does my son. 

However, I feel that the mother-in-law is completely in the wrong.

What would you say to my son and daughter-in-law if you were me?

Full disclosure, I think my son's mother-in-law is a raging b*tch. I never liked her from the start. But I'm trying to do better. I recognize that my personal feelings may impact my judgment. That's why I'm asking for your opinion.
